WEXFORD HARBOUR

Wexford Harbour in County Wexford is the natural harbour at the mouth of the River Slaney connecting the town to the Irish Sea. In past times, the area occupied by the harbour was larger than what it is today, 16km wide at its widest point, with mud flats on either side. Vikings arrived from Norway in 819 AD and founded the city of Wexford calling it Waes Fjord, meaning ‘inlet of the mud flats’.

During the 15th, 16th and 17th century, Wexford was Ireland’s leading fishing port, exporting fish, cloth, wool and hides to ports along the west coast of England and Wales. However, with the passing of time, commercial ships increase in size. By the 20th-century, the port declined owing to the estuary’s silting sands. It became unprofitable to operate the port resulting in its closure in 1968.

Wexford Harbour has witnessed many changes down through the years, today Wexford Harbour is used on a commercial basis by local fishing vessels and as a public amenity by the people of Wexford and beyond,who sail, fish or use the quay front to stretch the legs or just sit and watch the world go by.

HOW TO GET THERE

Wexford Harbour is only a short 25 minute drive from Treacys Hotel Enniscorthy. To drive there from our hotel, turn left onto Templeshannon on exiting our hotel. Continue straight before arriving to a Y in the road – proceed left continuing on N11. Continue on the N11 for 18km before turning left onto R730. Continue on R730, going straight through roundabouts, for 4 km. Drive around The Redmond Monument and take the first exit, turning left, continuing on R730. Continue on this road for 500 metres and your destination will be on your left.
